All corporations struggle with the frustrations and limitations of usable brand-approved visual assets. With that in mind, the Cisco team at Bleu saw an opportunity to have a little fun—in an environment that isn’t usually synonymous with humor: a fiscal presentation.
“We took a chance, and did something on our own,” says Daniel Garcia, Senior Account Director. The team wanted to “help Cisco out” and offer them some new “photo options” by doing a mock photo shoot with Bleu employees as models.
They spent time looking over the current stock of Cisco photos and chose some favorites that they could recreate with a humorous twist. “Humor is a great way to establish relationships,” says Domingo Johnson, Bleu Associate Creative Director. Johnson and Garcia enlisted other Bleu employees as models and set the scene. Sierra Hutto, Bleu Account Coordinator, says “we wanted goofy.”
Goal achieved. Perhaps if these Bleu employees decide that marketing is no longer for them, they may find a promising future in stock photos.
The team surprised Cisco by revealing their new “product photos” within a more serious business presentation. “We could have sent them the funny photos on April Fools’ Day as a fun little gag, but we decided to go big or go home,” says Johnson. The Cisco clients were puzzled at first over the new, unsolicited photos… until they noticed familiar faces. “I know that guy–that’s Dom!” said one Cisco client, and the room filled with laughter.
“It was great,” Johnson says. “It can be so easy to get caught up in the client’s requests that you can forget that you can have fun, too.” Hutto adds, “It’s important to build a client relationship on more than just the work. It’s not just about deliverables, timelines, and ROI—it’s got to be more personal.”
“We love our clients at Cisco,” says Luke Heyerman, Copy Chief. “Putting a smile on their face is always rewarding. But while the team did a great job posing for some pretty ‘interesting’ photos,” Heyerman adds with a smile, “I doubt they should hold their breath on seeing their faces up on the billboards at SFO any time soon.”
